Increasing suicide cases among students in Pakistan
Preet Nukrich
According to the WHO report suicide rate was 9.1 percent per 100,000 among 15-29 year age in Pakistan in 2014. The age group suggests majority is youth and students. Otherwise, they are young; they could have a bright future ahead. But something disturbs them to an extent that they choose to kill themselves. In most of the times the reason behind the suicide is mental health (depression, anxiety, pressure etc.) which is not even considered a health problem in our society. We have a few hospitals for mental health diseases. In all There are 3,000 beds at four mental hospitals — Hyderabad, Lahore, Peshawar and Mansehra. Another 3,000 beds are in private health facilities, and teaching hospitals like Civil Hospital and Agha Khan Hospital.
Journal of the Pakistan Medical Association shows, there are 100131 doctors registered with the Medical Council and 18029 specialists. There is output of around 5000 medical graduates from both public and private medical colleges. The total number of psychiatrists is 300 for such a large population which is grossly small number.
Many teenagers suffer from depression and have no one to help them cope with their illness because schools and parents fail to deal with the issue. School offers little support for students at risk and teachers are often unable to identify depressed students. Parents are also as unaware as schools are to the fact that their child may be depressed. They believe that their children are just experiencing difficulties that all children have. They mostly do not realize that for these temporary problems their child could choose the permanent solution of death.
Different surveys and researches suggest there are some major reasons which lead students to commit suicide.
Expectations: Parents want their children to be number 1 in studies regardless about the capacity of their mind to study. Our society keeps reminding us that meaning of success is to get good grades, this make the students anxious and depressed. When they couldn’t make it to their expectations, they fear to face them and attempt suicide.
Inability face personal failure: Youth faces failure in studies, personal goals, relations. This takes him/her to depression and sometimes to end life.
Public Disgrace: Students who couldn’t succeed in academics
when humiliated and constantly probed by others, it might get too
difficult for them to bear this all they become depressed.
First of all our society and its institutions accept mental health as dieases, which is curable. There is dire need of counseling of depressed students to develop acceptance towards their failures.
Freedom of choices should be given to students under guidance and counseling. If a student fails parents should support and motivate him not to give up easily and to try again.

Increasing suicidal rate of students in Pakistan.
The WHO estimated a suicide rate of 9.1 percent per 100,000 among 15-29 years of age in Pakistan in 2014.
So the question arises why students commit suicide? They are young, they could have a bright future ahead, then what’s that very thing that disturbs them so much that they choose to kill themselves. Most of the times the reason behind the suicide is mental health (depression, anxiety, pressure etc.) which is not even considered a health problem in our society. In Pakistan we hardly see a doctor when it comes to mental health , also we have a very less number of psychology hospitals in here not many. There are only 3,000 beds here in the shape of four mental hospitals — in Hyderabad, Lahore, Peshawar and Mansehra. Another 3,000 beds are in private practice, which include small hospitals and teaching hospitals like Civil Hospital and Agha Khan Hospital. A detailed study from the JPMA ( journal of the Pakistan medical association) shows There are 100131 doctors registered with the Medical Council and 18029 specialists. There is output of around 5000 medical graduates from both public and private medical colleges. The total number of psychiatrists is 300 for such a large population is a grossly small number.

Parents are also as unaware as schools are to the fact that their child may be depressed. They believe that their children are just experiencing difficulties that all children have. They mostly never realize that for these temporary problems their child could choose the permanent solution of death.
Here are some reasons due to which students commit suicide.
1. Expectations of parents and others.
Parents want their children to be number 1 in studies regardless about the capacity of their mind to study. Our society keeps reminding us that meaning of success is to get good grades. which make the students anxious and depressed. When they couldn’t make it to their expectations, they fear to face them and attempt suicide.
2. Not being able to face personal failure.
A student works hard during his academic life and when he fails or doesn’t get what he expected , he can’t accept this and instead of trying again and improving mistakes he would rather choose to die.
3. State is also responsible in students committing suicide.
There are a lot of things that state is supposed to provide for students but they are not doing so.
Pakistan is a poor country, state should built more government institutions and should also maintain them, so that students don’t have to pay high expenses of private institutions which majority of people couldn’t afford and face financial crises that makes them depressed.
4. Not letting students to choose desired career.
When a student is forced to pick any sort of career , he may not succeed in it and get fail, they attempt suicide not to face the society.
6. Public Disgrace.
Students who couldn’t succeed in academics when humiliated and constantly probed by others, it might get too difficult for them to bear this all they become depressed.
What needs to be done? To control such increasing suicide rate among students:
• Counselling of depressed students to develop acceptance towards their failures.
• Parents and teachers should consider mental health.
• Empowerment, encouragement and freedom of choices should be given to students by parents and teachers.
If a student fails parents should support and motivate him not to give up easily and to try again.
Students are pillars of our country’s future , if the same suicidal rate of students continues then its gonna put a bad impact on it’s development and image. State also needs to put some efforts regarding this , like to open more public institutions , to make conditions of already existing public institutions better, so that people could afford quality education without facing financial difficulties. Parents and teachers should consider mental health important and should support the students through their thick and thin so that the students wouldn’t even think of choosing death as a solution over temporary troubled life.

Increasing suicidal rate of students in Pakistan.

So the question arises why students commit suicide? They are young, they could have a bright future ahead, then what's that very thing that disturbs them so much that they choose to kill themselves. A study ( which study? who conducted this, and when? how old it is?) shows over 1 million people commit suicide in Pakistan every year and half of them are students. Most of the times the reason behind the suicide is mental health (depression, anxiety, pressure etc.) which is not even considered a health problem in our society. In Pakistan we hardly see a doctor when it comes to mental health , also we have a very less number of psychology hospitals in here ( find out figures).

In Pakistan academic reasons are on the top of the list of students suicide (who says so? any official or research report? can not give such sweeping statement without proof and evidence,) some of them are:
1.Expectations exerted on students from parents, teachers and society.
Parents want their children to excel in studies regardless about the capacity of their mind to study. Our society keeps reminding us that pillars of success are based on good grades , which make the students anxious and depressed. When they couldn't make it to their expectations, they fear to face them and attempt suicide.
