Article: Cyber Crime
Cyber crime
is any sort of criminal activity through computer or any networking device. It
is done for the purpose of blackmailing. To abuse some one mentally, to
generate finance and also for the purpose of spoiling some ones personal life.
Cyber criminals use personal information for malicious purpose. In South Asia
women and teenage girls are biggest victims of cyber crime. The problem is
expanding day by day due to lower rate of strict action against the
perpetrators of crime and very less regulations and prescribed law for stopping
menace of this crime in developing countries such as Pakistan.
There are
different types and forms of cyber crime:
Hacking:
The act of
getting unauthorized access to computer system or group of computers. To access
social media accounts and emails for purpose of blackmailing, to destroy
someone reputation or to give any financial blow.
Cyberstalking:
To harass
someone through social media platform and threat continuously.
Online
identity theft:
To steal
some ones personal information ( credit card and bank account information)
through online means.
Online child
abuse:
It is one of
the most ferocious crime. It includes activities of downloading and selling
child pornographic videos.
Ransomware
attack:
It attacks
the whole system and stops the data functioning. Then the perpetrator demands
ransom to give the affected person access.
Internet
fraud:
False
representation of things to make money. For example: A fake charitable
organization in the internet that intends to generate finance.
Such crimes
have certain punishments according to the cyber crime law of Pakistan, few of
which are mentioned below:
Spreading
false information about an individual can result in up to 3 years in prison or
up to one million rupees in fine, or both, if someone intentionally and
publicly displays any information through any information system, which he or
she knows to be false and by which he or or harms the reputation or privacy of
a person.
Child
pornography can be charged up to 7 years in prison or up to 5 million rupees in
fine, or both ,if a minor is shown to be engaged in sexually explicit conduct,
or a person appearing to be a minor is engaged in sexually explicit conduct, or
there are realistic images representing a minor engaged in sexually explicit
conduct.
Making
videos or making photographs and distributing them without consent are
punishable up to 3 years in prison or up to 1 million rupees in fine, or both. If someone takes a
photograph or makes a video of any person and displays or distributes it
without his or her consent and in a manner that harms that person.
So these are
some of the kinds and punishments of cyber crimes. there are many frauds going
in the world and especially in Pakistan of which people are not even much aware
off. All these things have been the reasons of suicide, depression, social
isolation. All these things harm the social reputation and in complex societies
it has become a stigma for the people who are affected. Polies are needed at
higher level to stop this heinous crime as it is affecting the growth as well
as more of the illegal practices are encouraged through it. Pakistan and other
countries of sub continent are far behind in establishing a system that can
curb cyber crime. People are even unaware of these crimes that are needed to be
educated enough. To curb this in Pakistan and other developing countries:
• An
awareness program should be launched where people should be educated about
different forms and types of crimes and the sort of negative impact it has on
society and life of people. Through electronic media, newspaper and other tool
people should be educated.
• Government
should encourage people thought its programs to report these type of crimes and
have to examples through taking action.
• Complete
cyber crime act should be designed by the lawmakers of the country and pass
that through parliament.
• All the
codes should be clear and conveyed to public.
• Mandated
cyber crime control agencies should be given modern tools and training to curb
cyber crime and a help and reporting center should be established in lower
level.
All this can
be helpful to control these activities and save many people from cyber crime.
