Saif
Samejo is the founder of The Sketches a folk music band of Pakistan, he is also
the lead vocalist in the band. Saif samejo is considered as one of the most
popular voices that gave a new birth to the old identity of Sindh and its sufi
poets. He is so much inspired from his motherland Sindh which is clearly
reflected from his music. He introduced the first ever music school in
Hyderabad / Jamshoro named as Lahooti Music Aashram. His band The Sketches
received attention and success not only from Pakistan but also from many other
countries. Saif Samejo has not just made a name as musician but is also known
for introducing the well respected music festival Lahooti melo. Lahooti melo
2019 was held in the premises of Sindh University.
Saif Samejo released a 10 minute epic song on coke studio season 11 called Dastan-e- Moomal Rano based on the poetry of sufi poet of Sindh Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai. He was also nominated in Lux Style Awards for singer of the year. In june 2013 Saif launched Lahooti Live Sessions. Its a weekly activity. Musicians from Sindh gathered at Saif’s place and play live music, performances are later uploaded on social media.
Saif Samejo was born on 23 january 1884 in Khairpur Mirs. He is the eldest among two brothers and two sisters. Saif has been very attached to his mother since beginning and on many occasions he has expressed his love for her. After completing his primary and secondary education in Khairpur he then moved to Hyderabad where he passed his intermediate from govt college and did his bachelors in English Literature from University of Sindh.
His attraction to sufi poetry was developed initially in childhood when he used to visit shrines of sufi poets with his father, later in university days he met a friend with common interests of sufi music named Naeem Shah that led to the creation of his band The Sketches.
Saif likes his space and tranquility , far from the infuriating environment of the cities Saif Samejo lives in the house located on the outskirts of Jamshoro. His house has two parts the one where the family lives and the other part forms the Lahooti Music Aashram. Saif has a little black and white dog named Murphy. Murphy loves Saif's music , every time the flute part in Dastan-e Moomal Rano played, murphy would begin howling in tune with the flute.
Saif is also a nature loving person, people who are following him on social media would know that he always gives messages on planting trees and had organized many such activities. Last year he organized tree plantation activity at Institute of English Language and Literature University of Sindh in which vice chancellor of the University along with teachers and students of IELL participated.
Where every young artist from pakistan opts to sing pop rock music , saif was the only person who opted to sing sufi sindhi folk music and modernized it in a way that it was appealing to todays youth and to the international audiences as well.
