Illegal Selling of Pakistan’s Precious Red Salt
Talha Qamar
It is a known fact that Pakistan is a
Rich country in term of natural resources. Richness like Coal, Gas, Oil,
Minerals, Gold, Iron, Copper and many more. These are just some of several
natural resources of Pakistan one of which is Himalayan Red Salt.
This limited reserve found in Punjab
and it is mined from Khewra Salt Mine. This salt has pinkish color and we often
used it as table salt. And it is also very beneficial for health and in a
simpler word it is “precious” for Pakistan.
Khewra salt mine produces 389,134 tons
of salt in 2018 and its total salt reserves were estimated around 82 million
tons to 600 million tones. In raw form, it is 98% pure while in 2% it contains
little amounts of minerals of Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium, Sulphates, and
moisture. As trace elements, it has Iron, Zinc, Copper, Manganese, and
Chromium.
According to previous studies, in 2003
mine has produced 385,000 tons of salt per year, which amounts to almost half
of Pakistan’s total production of rock salt. At that rate of output, the Mine
would be expected to last for another 350 years!
Pakistan is blessed with the wealth of
natural resources as I mentioned earlier. Despite that, the country has been
poor at converting that wealth into profits. Proper strategies, planning, and
mining have not been carried out systematically. Pakistan has failed to exploit
the reserves and make use of them to benefit the economy. Poor management of
natural resources of Pakistan is obvious by the lack of progress and revenue.
Pakistan had an estimated 700 miles
salt range, the largest in the world including those at Khewra, Wacha, and
Kalabagh. China, United States, India, and Germany were the largest salt
exporter destinations of Pakistan however pointed out that Pakistan exports
only raw salt and other countries sell the same using their brand and earning
huge foreign exchange
Himalayan Salt Better Than Regular
Salt. True fine quality Red Salt is one of the purest salt available in the
world and fortunately, Pakistan is the main distributor. Commercial table salt
contains nearly up to 99 percent of sodium chloride but an unrefined Himalayan
salt contains only 87 percent of it.
It has great health benefits, some of
the important ones are: Helps improving respiratory problems, Balances the
body’s pH, Natural Digestive aid, Air purifier and Helps with better sleep.
Same is the case with the Himalayan
Salt that is being sold to India for pennies while they resell it and make
billions Pakistan is blessed with salt reserves and instead of understanding
its importance and demand, it is being sold to countries especially to the
enemy nation for a price that is unjustified and too low. While they resell it
in high-end packaging at better prices making a large number of profits.
despite huge reserves, Pakistan was ranked at 20th place in salt export
countries with annual $ 1.7 billion exports even though it was among the
largest salt producing countries.
Either we are missing the brains on
this case or no one cared enough about salt exports deeming it not important of
a resource. Nonetheless, the general public has taken notice and they are not
pleased. Pakistani Twitter was in a wave of anger and a movement was started
under the hashtag #OurSaltOurAsset
The agenda behind this was to stop the
export of precious Pakistani salt to India at rates that exploited the nation
while benefited the neighbor.
The mining experts recently called for
evolving a comprehensive annual Salt Export Policy (SEP) to regularize
country’s salt trade and to develop a fine mechanism to sell the product in the
international market on modest prices. Despite being the world’s largest salt
producer, Pakistan drags at number 20 in the exporter's category and is unable
to take its place in the profitable world salt market.
In the recent interview, a senior
official of Commerce Ministry told APP (Associated Press of Pakistan). “We need
to stop the illegal trade and evolve proper Salt export Policy for regularizing
the salt export and proper branding to sell in the international market.
In a nutshell, Pakistan needs to
strengthen its salt mining sector from the grass-root level by incorporating
foreign market capturing strategies, try latest exploration and mining
techniques, improve business-friendly legal and trade policies, and capacity
building.
