First year vs. Final year
Every year in January a new batch
is enrolled in University of Sindh. These 150 or so students are merely 150
people. These are 150 individuals with dreams and aspirations. These are
students with expectations of a better future and the hope to become someone
who could contribute to our society.
With the induction of every new
batch there is a wave of excitement. Nearly 9 thousand new faces are added to
the university every year. This brings hope and joy not only for the new comers
but to the senior students as well. The second year students are happy because
they are no longer the most junior students, third year students now have
another chance to make new friends and the final year students have the honor
of being the most senior. In the new batch everyone is very happy and excited
in the start because we get to meet a whole lot of new people from different backgrounds,
cultures, languages and we now have the ability to be friends with them. The
students talk to a lot of people, hoping to find someone who resonates with
their interests or someone who rings some particular bells in their
heart.
In the first month of the year
large groups are made groups of many people start hanging out together but with
time the filtering starts people join and leave these groups and with time
every group becomes shorter and compact. Many students could be seen making desperate
efforts to make friends and often finding themselves with people who they don’t
match with. These friendships of convenience don’t last longer. There are
clashes of interests and soon they drift away as well.
Since at the start of the year
there is curiosity in students, they have fun and tend to stay in the university
till 3 pm. Even if they don’t have any academic activity. They like hanging out
with their friends or their someone specials as long as they can. Many students
make plans for outing and dining at restaurants or go for a movie or plan a
picnic at the start of the year.
The first-year students don’t
really focus on their study for most in the first semester specially. They bunk
classes, are late in submitting assignments and giving presentations.
But with time things change drastically
the same people change habits and their attitudes towards people and study when
they enter the final year of their studies.
A person who has survived 3
years of university becomes very selective in his choices. He/she does not make
many new friends. Many of the students have a core group of 4, 5 people who
they hang out with and making new friends or joining any other group at that
time becomes a little redundant.
They reach some level of
maturity; they seem to have developed some shell around them which they don’t
want to get out of or they don’t feel comfortable getting out of.
On the other hand, we could say
that on contrary to the first-year students the final year students are much
more concerned about their studies because it is their last academic year and
they are on the verge of their professional career. They have to maintain some
focus on their academics in order to complete their degree in the time of 4
years otherwise they might waste a year.
They start contacting people in
order to make contacts in their field of study so as soon as they leave the
university, they can have a job. Most final year student look for internship in
their summer or winter vacations. As it is their final chance to get any
experience of the field before they graduate.
The final year student does not
stay late in the university other than any academic work. They refer to leave
for home as soon as they are free. They don’t hang out a lot or socialize much.
Priorities change with time and their priority is their comfort and to get home
and get some sleep rather than hanging out with their friends, if they have many
left till the final year.
This journey from first year to
final year is hell of roller coaster ride. It tests you emotionally, mentally
and physically as well. They shape your personality, they define you as a
person and how you will live your life their on depends heavily on these 4
years.
